Mom's Money
Mom had to go to long term memory care recently. She doesn't have a “lot” of debt, because none of her credit cards had large lines, but all are maxed out. No assets besides a car that isn’t running. What’s the right thing to do here? My name isn’t on her loans, but I am her poa. I still have to notify SSI and SNAP that she’s admitted long term. Just waiting on her nursing home Medicaid application to finish processing and honestly super busy desperately trying to find work myself.
Also her car is still in her name so I'm not sure how to handle transferring or selling it because if her checking account goes over 2k she won't be eligible for nursing home Medicaid from what I understand. I don't want to get myself in trouble by accidently doing the wrong thing as a POA.
Her checking account had an overdraft loan that is at about 2k. So the modest amount that remains from SS (not SSI) after the nursing home takes the liability payment is being siphoned off by this auto payment. The auto pay cannot be cancelled and the bank requires an internal POA and will not recognize the financial POA that I have so I cannot move the funds. The only way I see around this is guardianship, which starts at 5k here I was told.
I'm super stressed out and exhausted so any tips are appreciated. Thank you!
