Mother In Law Promoting Illegal Behavior

Hi, my wife and I are in a complicated situation. Some background: my wife is her mother’s full time care taker and we do not know how long my mother in law has to live. My wife got a dui and license revoked late last year and is on probation for another 8 months and cannot drive. However, I come to find out that my mother in law is pressuring and guilt tripping my wife to drive her places….my wife has not driven yet but my mother in law is manipulating this situation.

I have expressed and told my mother in law explicitly that my wife will not drive her around, but mother in law won’t hear it and calls me selfish. Furthermore I even offered to pay for private transportation and take her wherever she needs. I put a boundary in place with my wife and my mother in law that I do not condone my wife driving and if she does, it’s divorce and I will not support my mother in laws care.

This is very frustrating for me, since my mother in law has nothing to lose while my wife and I will suffer severe consequences.

I fully understand my wife is an adult that makes her own decisions but with her mom dying and guilting her it’s a tough place to be in. I want to be supportive but protect myself and our son’s wellbeing.

My question is, do I have legal standing to sue or legally stop my mother in law for pushing this?

Also, in the event if my wife drives and causes an accident, how do I protect my assets like our house?
