Moving Company Billed Me For Lunch Breaks, Prayer Breaks, And A 2-hour Drive On A 30-minute Route.

Location: Seattle, WA

Hi Reddit. So I hired Rio Moving for a Seattle to Kent move today and it was a disaster from start to finish. I want to file a chargeback for the hours they padded but the call center representative I spoke to was adamant about not giving me any credit besides 30 minutes… which wouldn’t have mattered anyway because they prorate every minute above the hour to a full hour.

Here’s what happened:

  1. The original crew cancelled 45 minutes before the scheduled 12 PM arrival

  2. They found a replacement an hour later… I was told 3:00 PM, then 3:30, then 3:38, then 3:45. They showed up at 4:00 PM. Every time I called for an update they pushed it back further.

  3. During loading, the crew took a prayer break… with the clock running AND without telling me before hand

  4. During the drive they stopped for a 45 minute lunch break AND another prayer break, both on the clock without notifying me

  5. Seattle to Kent is a 30 minute drive. They took 2 hours.

  6. When I complained, dispatch told me I was “inhumane” for expecting paid hours to be worked

The company has a Wyoming registered agent address with no real office and an outsourced call center. Their website also cites FMCSA regulations despite this being a completely intrastate move.

Already filed an Amex dispute for the hours they padded.

My questions:

  1. Is my chargeback case solid?

  2. Can they actually lien my property or send this to collections over a legitimate dispute?
