My Employer Forced Me To Use All My Pto For The Year Only Fmla Leave And Wants Me To Pay It Back

(Throw away account because I signed an NDA)

To elaborate on the title, the company I worked for for 3 years was bought out by another company. The new company required all pto for the year to be used before FMLA could be unpaid (trust me, I asked; I knew I'd be out quite a bit; I live out of state and have barely seen my family due to this policy). Finally, recently I had to leave, as the stress of the job was exacerbating the symptoms of my disability. Come to find out, they want me to pay them almost $2k in clawbacks for pto I was forced to take. I explained this to them and how I was never told of the potential clawback, were I to need to leave (due to disability or otherwise). My manager didn't even know about the clawbacks until someone left the company and was forced to pay out their overused pto (which they actually got to use for vacation). Maybe I'm just being naive, but it doesn't seem right to me that I have an uncontrollable condition I'm now being forced to pay for when I was forced to take the pto in the first place. This is a billion-dollar company, mind you. They aren't hurting for the cash. They barely paid me enough to pay my bills, let alone have an extra 2k lying around. Do I have any legal standing
