My Half Sister Is Has Downs Syndrome. How Do I Protect Her If My Mom Passes Away?
Location: Florida. My half sister (mom's from a previous marriage) has down syndrome. My dad and other sister have both mentioned putting her in situations that would not be in her best interest (specifically, making her a ward of the state where she would likely be in a group home or sending her to her stepsister who hates her and has every reason to lock her up in the basement for some sort of deranged torture) if my mom passes away. Ive promised my mom that my sister will be taken care of. What paperwork needs to be put in place to ensure her care will be my responsibility? my mom has written a letter stating her wishes and signed it but i want something formal that will stand up to any challenges. my dad has made it clear he will challenge me in court if I try to take her in and he said he will do everything possible to send her away, which is unacceptable. my sister has never been formally deemed incompetent. she does get disability benefits. I attempted to research this online and get differing results, each attempt leads to more confusion rather than clarity. recently my mom has had some health problems so addressing this now is important.. I greatly appreciate any advice provided in this matter. ????✌️????
