My Hoa Is Asking For An Extra 500k From The Community
Location: NJ in USA. I live in a townhome the HOA is 300 a month 2 weeks ago everyone in the community received a letter that we need to pay an extra 250 a month for the next 6 months due to damages from a snow storm. This comes out to 1500 a household and 519k from the community. The damages they’re asking for is cracked driveways, a fence that needs repairs, trees that fell (there are none) and leaks in peoples roofs on 45 units. They are calling it an emergency assessment. They are asking for the first payment 10 days before our next board meeting. After some pushback in our group chat on Facebook about the increase in payment, We then as a community find out our board had an emergency meeting did not let the community know and they elected a new board member without a vote from the community which no one in the community knew it was open. Our bylaws state that all meetings must be announced to the community within 48 hours as well as an open vote to fill a seat. Bylaws also state any emergency funds must be voted on by 2/3 of homeowners at a meeting 30 days before payment is due which was not done. What can me and my community do?
