My Mom's Stepkids Are Trying To Take Half Of Her Estate
Location: Kentucky, USA
My mother re-married after my dad's death, and that husband also died in 1999, in his sixties. He had told my mother that the house they lived in would be hers to do with as she wished, and he left his substantial farm property to his three adult children.
In the ensuing years, my mother remarried once again and also remodeled the interior of the house. She let me and my sisters know that the house would be the whole of her estate, as she had put her own money into it (including, of course, money that my Dad had left her). She died 2 years ago, and her estate has been in flux ever since, as the second husband's kids have been fighting me and my siblings over our right to the property. It has been sold but we have only received half of the money from the sale, while the rest sits somewhere gathering dust (but not interest).
Our lawyer was trying to keep this out of court, though I'm not sure why, but now we're faced with a court date and I have no idea what to expect. What will we need to do?
Thank you for any help or advice.
