My Neighbor Shot Through A Shared Wall. Do I Have A Case?

Card image cap

Location: Connecticut

I rent a townhome and at the end of last year, my neighbor discharged a firearm inside his apartment, and the bullet entered my bathroom, passing through my shower and lodging in the outer wall. I was physically in the bathroom at the time, 4 feet away from the shower. While I was not physically injured, the situation was terrifying.

Upon me calling 911 and the police coming to investigate what happened, my neighbor, who lives alone, said he was at home playing video games, and that he heard and saw nothing, even was trying to “help” figure out what happened . Turns out, he tried spackling the bullet hole in his apartment, which delayed police investigation. Eventually police were able to spot the patched up hole and arrested him, seized 4 other firearms and an alarming amount of ammunition, and he was released the next morning.

The rifle he “accidentally” discharged was a black CZ chambered in .300 blackout. I was in the shower minutes prior to him discharging it.

There was damage to my apartment that has still not been repaired by my landlord which poses a mold risk, but my landlord has been neglecting the repair because of cost. I have also experienced ongoing emotional distress and unrest because of this , and him still living next door to me.

The case was handled criminally, and he was denied accelerated rehabilitation and placed on probation. He will be able to have his guns back after he has completed his probation.

The more I talk and explain what happened, the more people suggest I look into suing him. I have no experience with any of this and not even sure if I have a case here…
