Need To Change Attorney
I’ll try to make this very brief.
The city in which my mother lived (Georgia, USA) was responsible for a sewage back-up that partially flooded her basement. We have been trying since August 2025 to receive restitution for the damage that caused and for the reconstruction of my mother’s house. We hired an attorney almost immediately because we knew that dealing directly with that city was a fool’s errand.
Our attorney, though, consistently tells us he’s working on it, he’ll let us know when he has more information, and that we don’t need to get in touch with him asking for updates with any sort of regularity. However, we have never actually signed a contract to work with him: this has been a verbal agreement, because he never did return a contract to us with specifics regarding fees, etc. The only sign of progress that we’ve ever received has been notification that the city has offered an extremely lowball offer, but after we rejected that we still have not heard back from him. That was almost a month ago.
It is clear that we need to hire a new attorney. But after this amount of time and who knows how much work has actually been done on this case, how do we even go about this? Are we possibly looking at setting back this entire process another year and three months or more?
My mom has since passed. We have used a bulk of the money her and my dad (also deceased) saved up in order to fix the house.
