Nys: Marriage Certificate Wrong And Unsure How To Fix All The Issues It’s Caused.
Location: upstate NY. I got married in June, and I’m just now realizing my marriage certificate has the box checked indicating that I was keeping my surname, which I was not and did not.
The clerk never asked or brought it up when we went to get our marriage license, and me not knowing any better how the process works, didn’t realize there was that mix up.
Problem is, I was still somehow able to go about changing my name with the SSA and then DMV. Nobody said anything about that box being checked. I tried to upgrade to REAL ID this week and was turned away because of this. I called the city clerk about it. She said because I already changed it with SSA that they can’t fix it and I have to go through the DOH. I called the number on the DOH site (office of vital statistics) and they told me I have to go through the clerk. None of this is making any sense and it is STRESSING me out.
I’m hoping I’m not the only person this has happened to and someone can help me with the correct steps, since my city clerk is absolutely useless.
