Old Band Took Away Song Credits

Card image cap

Hey so I started a band with a guy a little over two years ago, and left that band about one year ago after a falling out with that same guy. I told them that they could keep 4, out the 8 songs I wrote for our 12 song album, and asked them not to use the four I would be taking with me.

They eventually released one anyways, and when I reached out about it, they told me that they sought council, and were told that the songs legally belonged to the music project, and that as long as they gave me credit, that’s all there is to it. I wasn’t really buying it because they changed the project name after I left so technically I didn’t write the songs for their new band, but instead the one I was still in, but I decided I’d be okay with it since they did in fact give me credit.

That being said, I recently saw that all of the songs currently released, that were originally credited me, no longer provide any credit to me whatsoever. I have all the original demos for the songs, emails of me sending them to the band to get their thoughts, and lyrics saved on my phone. Do I have enough to sue? At the moment they are just a small time band, but in the event that things were to take off, I could potentially be getting screwed out of money, and a good reference for future writing endeavors.
