Overheard My Supervisor Telling Another Supervisor That They’ve Been Accidentally Underpaying Me For 8 Weeks
Location: Arizona
8 weeks ago I started a new job. I work at a school.
The base pay for the position was listed at $19 an hour. I’ve been getting paid $19/hour for the last 8 weeks.
Today when I got to work I was a few minutes early and was hanging out in the break room making some coffee. One of the supervisors was in the room next to the break room and I saw my supervisor walk in. Neither of them could see me in the break room.
I heard my name and started listening and essentially overheard a conversation in which my supervisor was saying that they were actually underpaying me because she did not realize that I have a master’s degree, and the pay for the position, if I have the degree, is actually $22 and not $19. (The degree IS on my resume so I’m assuming she missed it? idk)
I couldn’t hear everything they were saying, but at one point the other supervisor said something like “well she (meaning me) could try to reclaim the lost wages since it was our fault, but since she hasn’t said anything yet I’m assuming she isn’t aware we messed it up so I would just leave it and fix the pay” to which my supervisor stated they had fixed it that morning.
Then she made a joke hoping I didn’t “stir anything up”, the two laughed, and that was it.
I just checked my employee pay and it was changed to $22, but my question is, how would I go about reclaiming the lost pay, and can I actually even do that?
