Pastor Ex-fiancé Publicly Tells A False Version Of Our Breakup As His Testimony. Can A Lawyer Help Make It Stop?

Location: Colorado

My ex-fiancé is now a pastor, and he uses a false version of our breakup as part of his “testimony” and conversion story in sermons.

In reality, I ended the relationship after he sexually assaulted me.

I’ve stayed silent for years and I’m not looking to sue him or publicly expose him. I just want him to stop using me and our relationship under false pretenses as part of his public story.

I have recordings/transcripts of some of the sermons, and I’m considering hiring an attorney to send a letter to him and/or church leadership asking that he stop referring to me or our relationship publicly.

Does this sound like a reasonable issue to bring to an attorney, or is this not really something a lawyer would handle?

If it is, what type of attorney should I be looking for?

Edit: Just to clarify, I’m not asking whether I have a strong defamation lawsuit or whether I can “punish” him legally. My goal is way narrower: I just want to know whether it’s reasonable to hire an attorney to advise me and, if appropriate, send a formal letter asking him to stop using our relationship in his public testimony.
