Physically Assaulted In A Store, Police Already Make It Sound Like He Got Away With It.

Card image cap

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

I was in line with my mom at the cash register behind a younger man. He thought my cart was too close to him so he pushed it back with his foot. Fine, whatever. The line moved up and I moved closer as well and he pushed it again. This time with enough force to knock both my mother and I backwards to which I pushed it back with some force and asked him what his problem was. After some verbal back and forth he dropped his stuff and approached me and hit me twice on the face, one time also clipping my mom across the nose.

He just walked out right after. I called the police and they took the footage, and then said they couldn't get a license plate number because he covered it up with his shirt right after he got to his car. They said they'll give it to the detective and he'll try to find the owner of the specific vehicle but basically told me they don't have much to work with.

I got out of the ER a few hours ago with 3 stitches on the outside and 2 on the inside, but thankfully I don't have any broken bones or serious damage otherwise.

Is there seriously nothing I can do? People get to just physically assault strangers in a checkout line and walk away with zero repercussions? Can I trust the police to do anything and if I can't what are my options?
