Pulled Over For Sudden Stop At A Red Light, Received A Failure To Signal Citation (ny Traffic Law 1163c). Is There Anything I Can Do To Avoid The Fine And Points On My License?
Location: Upstate NY, US
I was pulled over a little while ago on a section of road I have never driven on before (if I did, it was a long time ago). I was driving for business purposes (DoorDash) at the time, but I doubt that makes any difference in court. I had been paying more attention to the road farther ahead (which was is a mistake on my part) and almost missed the red light directly in front of me. I slammed on the brakes to avoid running the light and my car was stopped behind the line. Unfortunately for me, there was a cop (unmarked, don't know if that info is helpful in court) watching nearby who pulled me over shortly after and I was cited for a violation of NY 1163C which states "No person shall stop or suddenly decrease the speed of a vehicle without first giving an appropriate signal in the manner provided herein to the driver of any vehicle immediately to the rear when there is opportunity to give such signal." I have court in about 2 weeks, and am looking for advice on what to do about this. I would likely have to self represent as I lost my primary job recently, currently make under 1500/month (half of which goes to rent) and therefore there is really no way I can afford a lawyer at this time. I want to avoid having insurance go up if possible, as that would really cut into my grocery budget. Any advice is appreciated.
