Rent Went Up $500 Out Of Nowhere

Card image cap

Location: Buda, Texas

I have lived in the same apartment since December of 2023. Rent and bills have consistently come up as $1500-$1600 a month and we have always paid on time with no issues. Fast forward to October and they have been bought by another company. They had some issues getting their payment portal up, but rent was paid and we carry on. November and December were paid no problem. Then comes January and I receive an itemized email with the same charge as usual. Then I go to pay and it’s almost $2000 total. They have sent out an email saying to hold questions and not pay rent until February 2nd. Mind you, we will still be charged for late fees on the 4th. I have my itemized receipt and there was zero notice for increased fees. The only letter reflecting any price change was in an offer to renew our lease (which hasn’t been accepted and isn’t due until April) So what protection do I have in this scenario? There is no earthly way I can afford this up charge, especially with such short notice. My savings is in a tight spot as it is so I really can’t just suck it up and pay.
