Someone I Live With Stole My Girlfriends Car

Card image cap

Location: Canada .

My girlfriend and I live with my parents who run a foster home.

About a month ago, one of the foster kids (16 male) stole her car in the early hours of the morning and completely totalled it.

The responding officer caught him fleeing the scene and just brought him home not under arrest, no breathalyzer nothing.

The social worker responsible for the foster kid had said that my girlfriend would be getting paid out for her vehicle once the insurance adjuster appraised her vehicles worth after being deemed a write off. She also stated that they would pay for a rental in the meantime until everything was settled.

Fast forward a month later my girlfriend has gone through all the proper channels and jumped through every hoop in regards to insurance and the appraisal which ended up being a quote of $16,000

the social worker nor anyone from that branch of government has done anything. No rental no mention of time of payment nothing and I just found out they are trying to make it and at fault claim on her insurance because the foster kid had access to her keys.

I have a strong feeling this is going to end up going to civil court or something along those lines with how little effort and information we are getting on our end and I want to possibly get my ducks in a row with a lawyer but don’t really know where my girlfriend and I stand from a legal stand point.

Side note the rcmp have made it clear that they will not be charging him with anything and may or may not give him some fines but ultimately it’s up to my parents and social worker to “punish” him which so far has only consisted of him losing his phone.
