Taxes
Location: Colorado
I have had a small side gig of pet and house sitting for about 11 years now. It is my small main source of income since I don't on paper qualify for disability but in reality I am unable to work a “normal paycheck job” due to insane migraines, nerve pain, POTS, MCAS, and a handful of other disorders. I am on Medicaid but I have never filed taxes with any earnings. I know I should have kept better track and been reporting, but I didn’t and I already feel bad enough about it. I will still qualify for Medicaid under the new laws coming in 2027.
I am wondering what are my next steps to get information together to file taxes. Should I see a lawyer or an accountant? I am already dealing with medical debts, and I have considered filing for bankruptcy due to those debts; would that cover any back taxes? I need to get my taxes in order to keep my Medicaid. I will not be able to even qualify for private insurance and I need to keep my health insurance. Please help with any and all advice! Thank you!
Also, I am in Colorado if that makes any difference.
