The Clerk’s Office Sends Me This Same Letter Every Month, And I’m Not Sure What It Means?

RE: Surplus Funds from In-Re Tax Foreclosure
File No. xxx

To Whom It May Concern:
In reviewing our files, we find that the xxx County Clerk of Court's Office is
holding surplus funds resulting from the above captioned in rem tax foreclosure in the amount of $14,000.
We recommend you consult an attorney regarding the proper documentation for this procedure and the proper procedure to serve all lien holders. Again, call an attorney for any legal questions. The clerk's office cannot give legal advice. These funds will be escheated to the State Treasurer's office unless a hearing is held to determine the proper distributions.

For context, a few years ago the court reached out to me about a property that evidently my deceased mother and ex-husband had owned, but had not paid taxes on in several years, and would be foreclosed. After doing some research, I reached out to my one other sibling who had a stake in the property and we sort of mutually decided that it wasn’t worth the trouble to try to keep the property from going into foreclosure, given that the overdue taxes were more than either of us could ever reasonably afford.

Now, the clerk’s office is sending me this letter every month. Correct me if I’m wrong, but what I’m gathering from it is that they foreclosed it, sold it for more than the overdue amount and this is what’s left over? But if I need to ‘consult’ an attorney as the letter says, I’d be stuck paying legal fees. Plus, wouldn’t I have to split it with the other stakeholder or at least be able to get in contact with them? I feel like that is once again, more trouble than it’s worth, but I also know nothing about legal fees or what exactly this letter means. Does anyone have any advice, or know what my options are?
