What Obligations Do I Have In Storing My Handgun With A Felon In The House?
(Posting for a friend that doesn't use reddit)
Location: TX (but might be a federal issue)
I have a legally owned handgun for defense. I have nothing on my record preventing me from purchasing or owning firearms.
I rent a room in a house. I recently found out one of my new roommates has a felony record. My understanding is that felons cannot have access to firearms.
I keep my handgun hidden, no one in the house nor the landlord knows I own it, and nothing in my lease prevents having it.
However, since it is for defense, it is kept quickly accessible in a piece of furniture with a hidden bottom.
While I cannot think of a likely way the new roommate would know about it or find it, my understanding is he could be in trouble if it was discovered.
Do I have any obligation to change my setup? I had no say in this roommate coming in, and I don't feel like I should have to make adjustments for his past crimes.
Am I personally in any way liable for this? Does it matter I was here first? If, God forbid, it was necessary to use or something, could he be subsequently arrested if he wasn't even involved in the situation?
