Best Online Vet Services: Pet Telehealth Compared For 2026

Card image cap

Online vet services let you talk to a licensed veterinarian by video, phone, or chat — usually within minutes, often 24/7, and at a fraction of an in-person visit. They’re a good fit for non-emergency questions, behavior issues, prescription refills, and second opinions. They’re not a replacement for hands-on care in true emergencies.

We compared the major pet telehealth services on availability, cost, prescribing ability, and care quality. Here are the seven worth considering, plus what to look for.

How we evaluated pet telehealth services

We weighed five factors: licensed veterinarian availability (24/7 vs. business hours), per-visit pricing or subscription model, ability to prescribe medications (varies by state regulations), additional features like medical-record storage and follow-up care, and customer-reported wait times and care quality.

One thing worth flagging upfront: in most US states, a vet cannot legally prescribe new medications without an existing in-person Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR). That limits what any telehealth service can do for a brand-new patient regardless of who you use.

1. Vetster

Best overall. Vetster connects you with licensed veterinarians in your state by video appointment, with most slots available the same day. Pricing runs around $50-90 per appointment depending on the vet. Vets can prescribe medications where a VCPR already exists, and Vetster covers exotic and small-pet specialists in addition to dogs and cats.

The booking flow shows real vet credentials and reviews before you book, which is a meaningful trust signal. Available across North America and the UK.

2. Pawp

Best subscription option. Pawp is a flat-rate membership at around $24/month for unlimited 24/7 video and text consultations for up to six pets. The model is built for households with multiple pets or owners who message a vet often.

Pawp also includes a $3,000 emergency fund per year — usable once after the membership is six months old — that can offset emergency vet costs. Read the fine print on what the fund covers before relying on it.

3. AirVet

Best for benefits programs. AirVet is often offered as a pet benefit through employers, pet insurance plans, and pet food brands. If you have it through a benefits program it’s free or low-cost; standalone it runs around $35 per call.

Vets are available 24/7 by video. The service handles consultations and triage well but is not built for chronic-condition management.

4. Fuzzy Pet Health

Best for ongoing pet care. Fuzzy positions itself as a virtual primary care vet rather than a one-off consult service. The Fuzzy Plus subscription runs around $20/month and includes unlimited 24/7 chat with vets, plus discounts on supplements, food, and supplies from their store.

Best fit for owners who want a continuous relationship with the same care team rather than a different vet each call.

5. WhiskerDocs

Best for urgent triage at any hour. WhiskerDocs specializes in 24/7 urgent care triage — helpful when you’re trying to figure out at 2am whether you need to drive to the emergency vet or whether it can wait until morning. Pricing runs around $40 per consultation or $17/month for unlimited.

Veterinary technicians handle initial triage with vets available for escalation. The service stops short of prescribing for new patients.

6. FirstVet

Best for international travelers. FirstVet operates across the US, UK, and most of Europe with consistent quality and pricing (around $40 per video consultation). If you travel with your pet or live in multiple countries, FirstVet is one of the few services with cross-border continuity.

Vets are licensed in the country where the consultation occurs. Records carry across markets within your account.

7. Petriage

Best for monitoring chronic conditions. Petriage partners with your existing in-person vet clinic rather than replacing it. You use the Petriage app between visits to log symptoms, get AI-assisted triage, and message your clinic. Pricing is typically bundled by the clinic.

Best fit if you already have a vet you trust and want a structured way to stay connected between visits.

How to choose a pet telehealth service

If you want flexibility and access to many vet types: Vetster.

If you have multiple pets or expect to use the service often: Pawp or Fuzzy.

If you need a sounding board at 2am: WhiskerDocs or Pawp.

If you travel with your pet across borders: FirstVet.

If you already love your in-person vet and want to extend that relationship: Petriage.

Before signing up for any subscription service, check what they can and cannot prescribe in your state. New-patient prescribing rules vary widely, and the “unlimited consultations” benefit is much less useful if the vet can’t write the script your pet needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online vet prescribe medication for my pet? In most US states, no — not for new patients. A pre-existing in-person Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) is required for legal prescribing. A handful of states have eased this rule; check your state’s veterinary board for the current status.

When should I use an in-person vet instead? True emergencies (active bleeding, suspected poisoning, seizures, difficulty breathing, severe trauma), anything requiring physical examination or diagnostics like X-rays, and most surgical or dental issues. Telehealth is best for behavior questions, mild GI issues, skin observations, second opinions, and routine follow-ups.

Are online vet consultations covered by pet insurance? Some pet insurance plans cover telehealth consultations; many don’t. Check your specific policy. Some plans (e.g., Lemonade, Pumpkin) include telehealth as a built-in member benefit.
