Sound Therapy For Dogs And Cats: How Healing Frequencies Support Health
Discover how sound therapy uses healing frequencies to reduce stress, support healing, and improve overall well-being in dogs and cats.
Humans have used sound for healing since the beginning of time. From toning, humming, chanting, and singing to modern sonic, ultrasonic, and subsonic technologies, we have long recognized its therapeutic potential. Today, sound therapy for dogs and cats is used as a healing approach that uses vibration and frequency to support physical, emotional, and energetic well-being.
How can sound heal?
Sound healing occurs through vibration and resonance. It encompasses everything from ancient Solfeggio tones to brain waves, chakra-energy centers, and the frequencies associated with organs and cells. The Solfeggio system takes its name from a musical teaching method developed by 11th-century monk Guido d’Arezzo.
All structures and systems are a conglomerate of vibrational relationships between atoms. The harmony and coherence within the structure is at the foundation of its well-being, whether it be mineral, plant, animal or human.
Sound therapy uses the concept of resonate frequencies to restructure dis-ease and dis-harmony in the body. It creates harmony and coherence within the system to facilitate healing.
Sound therapy merges ancient wisdom with modern science. It uses the power of frequencies to support physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being in humans and animals.
The scientific definition of sound therapy
All things vibrate, from subatomic particles to galaxies and everything in between, including us and our dogs and cats.
- Sound is audible vibration. We measure it in Hertz (Hz), the number of complete vibrations (cycles) that occur in one second. We call this the sound’s frequency.
- We measure the loudness or amplitude of sound in decibels (dB).
Different Hz and dB have the ability to heal. But sound therapy is not limited to audible vibrations.
Sound creates light
When particles collide, a transfer of periodic motion occurs between adjacent colliding atoms or molecules. In this way, they pass on vibrational information.
All molecules have electromagnetic fields around them. Their collisions release electromagnetic energy in the form of infrared light emissions. In this way, sound creates light. Researchers have documented the well-known benefits of infrared light therapies.
Metaphysical, mathematical and musical relationships
Nikola Tesla said: “If you only knew the magnificence of 3, 6 and 9, you would have the keys to the Universe.” By taking any number and breaking it down to a single digit, we can see the relationship between Solfreggio harmonics, chakra frequencies, and the pattern of 3, 6 and 9. This is not a coincidence.
Solfeggio and chakra frequencies, and their meanings
174 Hz – Pain relief: 1+7+4=12 and 1+2=3
285 Hz – Cellular repair: 2+8+5=15 and 1+5=6
396 Hz – Liberation from fear (root chakra): 3+9+6=18 and 1+8=9
417 Hz – Facilitating change (sacral chakra): 4+1+7=12 and 1+2=3
528 Hz – Love and transformation (solar plexus chakra): 5+2+8=15 and 1+5=6
639 Hz – Relationship harmony (heart chakra): 6+3+9=18 and 1+8=9
741 Hz – Intuition and detox (throat chakra): 7+4+1=12 and 1+2=3
852 Hz – Spiritual order (third eye chakra): 8+5+2=15 and 1+5=6
963 Hz – Divine connection (crown chakra): 9+6+3=18 and 1+8=9
Principles of sound therapy: vibroacoustics and psychoacoustics
We generally divide sound therapy into vibroacoustic and psychoacoustic approaches.
- Vibroacoustics: the study of how sound affects us on a deep cellular, molecular, atomic, and energetic level when it enters the body.
- Psychoacoustics: the study of how humans and animals interpret sound psychologically and neurologically. It’s not just the sound we play — it’s how the listener experiences it.
Psychoacoustics essentially relies on the idea that sound waves produce unconscious activity within the brain. The brain breaks sound down into neural information that affects the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Therapeutic uses of sound therapy for dogs and cats
Vibroacoustic and psychoacoustic sound therapy offers physiological and psychological benefits to animals. Modern sound therapy includes many modalities, from singing, toning, and humming to music therapy, sound baths, tuning forks, singing bowls, vibroacoustic therapy, and binaural beats.
The principle of entrainment underlies these practices. Just as the body can align with a musical beat, it can also attune to specific frequencies for therapeutic benefit.
1. Psychoacoustic therapy
We can use psychoacoustic techniques to:
- Mimic calming natural environments
- Reduce anxiety triggers
- Match a dog or cat’s hearing range and sensitivities.
Practitioners design psychoacoustic therapy by adjusting frequency, rhythm, tempo, and volume to produce a calming sensory experience. Unlike ordinary music, psychoacoustic soundtracks are engineered to align with an animal’s unique hearing range and sensitivities.
Dogs and cats hear much higher frequencies than we do (see sidebar on page xx). Therapeutic audio often softens or removes sharp, high-pitched tones. It emphasizes steady, low-frequency sounds that feel safe and predictable.
These frequencies can mimic natural environments or biological rhythms, such as a resting heartbeat, causing a relaxation response in the nervous system.
Animal professionals increasingly recognize psychoacoustic therapy as a useful tool for managing stress and anxiety in dogs and cats. This form of sound therapy can be especially helpful during common anxiety triggers like separation, thunderstorms, fireworks, travel, or veterinary visits.
By promoting a sense of calm, these soundscapes may reduce behaviors such as excessive barking, pacing, or destructive chewing. Over time, consistent use can help animals build resilience to stressful situations and improve overall well-being.
Even deaf or hard of hearing animals can feel the vibrations and get healing benefits from sound therapy. You can find a variety of animal therapy music tracks on YouTube. Try them out and see which ones your dog or cat likes best.
2. Vibroacoustic therapy
This approach uses vibration from sources such as tuning forks, PEMF devices, and shockwave therapy. This type of sound therapy has many benefits:
- Facilitates pain mediation
- Enhances nitric oxide production, helping dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow
- Activates the meridian or fascia system
- Creates fluid shifts and promotes movement of the lymphatic system
- Stimulates the vagus nerve and increases parasympathetic stimulation
- Increases availability of oxygen to hypoxic muscles, and of oxygen binding to hemoglobin molecules
- Awakens cells in the sleeping phase, decreasing the presence of cell senescence
- Generates exclusion zone water in the body cells, which helps generate cell energy.
Sound is at the foundation and core of all creation. Modern science has renewed interest in this ancient practice. Whether generated by voice, instrument or device, sound holds the potential to heal, harmonize and transform our animal companions and ourselves.
As we continue to rediscover the vibrational nature of life, sound therapy for dogs and cats bridges the gap between science and spirit, and between the physical and metaphysical worlds. It’s an echo of our deepest biological and spiritual rhythms, both in ourselves and our animal companions.
What’s your “vibe”?
Everybody has a unique vibrational signature that resonates with a particular sound — what we “vibe” to.
This is why we have favorite types of music — music that feels really good to us and makes us want to move and dance. Other types of music make us cringe, yet another person may love them. Animals such as dogs and cats are no different.
Auditory ranges: animals are sensitive to sound
Most dogs hear frequencies between 40 Hz and 60,000 Hz. Cats can hear up to 85,000 Hz, far beyond the human limit of 20,000 Hz, so they can hear tiny mice in the fields they’re hunting in.
Dogs can hear sounds as low as 0 dB (near silence), and around 20 dB (a whisper). Ocean waves produce about 70 dB, a level we consider a sweet spot for healing. The sound of a heartbeat is 10-30 dB.
Vibration connects everything
Sonopuncture offers another fascinating example of how vibration connects living systems. Applying a 136.1 Hz tuning fork to specific acupuncture points may help relieve pain. This frequency also aligns with Earth’s orbital frequency and the “OM” tone often associated with the heart chakra.
Swiss mathematician, Hans Cousto, described other planetary frequences. He developed the “Cosmic Octave” formula in 1978, translating celestial orbital periods into audible frequencies.
