Ahead Of Meeting With Ai Executives, Trump Says He Won’t Stifle Ai Growth

President Donald Trump reiterated that he will continue to back unregulated artificial intelligence growth and development during an event launching the AI-powered America.gov on Tuesday.

Trump’s comments come after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington last week and hours before he is expected to meet with executives from top tech companies for a lunch meeting on AI at the White House.

The new website “is one more example of why I will never stifle the growth of technology that will be bigger than the industrial revolution,” Trump said during the event.

He added, “and President Xi was here. We talked about [AI], not that much because I didn’t want to do anything. We’re leading, so why would I want to do anything?”

Administration officials celebrated the launch of the new website, touting it as an AI-powered government portal where individuals can search across thousands of government sources. Following his speech, some AI industry leaders are expected to have lunch with the president, and a small group will speak at a panel for the website.

Among those in attendance at Tuesday’s lunch will be Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who was the first to publicly call for a slowdown of AI development. Greg Brockman, the president of OpenAI, will also be at the meeting after OpenAI canceled the release of its latest model Monday due to safety concerns.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who will be in attendance at the lunch meeting with AI executives, called for more “oversight” and “transparency” over the industry on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

“There’s a corporate responsibility here. Of course these folks have to provide safe products,” Johnson said. “But I think a little oversight, a little transparency, a little external auditing of what’s going on would calm the nerves of a lot of people.”
