Howard Lutnick Will Testify To Congress About Jeffrey Epstein Next Month

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has agreed to appear before Congress next month to face questions about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein that emerged with the release of documents about the convicted sex offender.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sought Lutnick’s testimony as a part of its probe of the investigation into Epstein, who died in jail before he could face federal sex trafficking charges.

Lutnick’s transcribed interview is slated for May 6, per two people familiar with the planning. Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the committee’s chair, announced last month that the commerce secretary had “proactively agreed to appear voluntarily” before the panel after Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) vowed to force a vote to subpoena him.

Lutnick, whose scheduled appearance was first reported by CNN, has said he cut ties with the sex offender in 2005. But the commerce secretary later conceded he had lunch with Epstein on his island after his 2008 conviction for soliciting a prostitute.

Democrats have accused Lutnick of misleading the public about the extent of his relationship with Epstein. The White House has largely shrugged at the revelations.

Comer has also subpoenaed former Attorney General Pam Bondi as a part of the committee’s probe over her handling of the Justice Department’s documents about Epstein. Even after President Donald Trump fired her from the top post at DOJ on Thursday, though, committee members said they still expect her to testify, and Comer has not ruled out moving forward with her deposition.
