Israel Strikes Lebanon As Conflict Broadens Throughout Middle East

The U.S.-Israel war against Iran broadened out overnight as Israel launched strikes at Lebanon and Iran began striking critical Aramco oil facilities in the Gulf.

Israel’s early morning strikes in Hezbollah-controlled areas in Beirut killed 31 people and injured 149, according to the Lebanese health ministry, and came after Hezbollah, which is backed by Tehran, fired rockets at Israel. The group said it was avenging the killing of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died during the U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Saturday.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a post to X that Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, “is now a marked target for elimination.”

“Whoever follows in the path of Khamenei will soon find himself with him in the depths of hell along with all the thwarted elements of the axis of evil,” Katz added.

As hostilities between Israeli Defense Forces and Hezbollah unfolded, Iran launched a drone strike against Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura plant, forcing the country's largest oil refinery in the area to pause production as officials assess damages.

Despite the escalating military operations in the Middle East, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Monday pushed back against early worries that the Iran attacks will lead to a longer, prolonged war.

“This is not Iraq. This is not endless. This is the opposite," he said during a Pentagon briefing.

But President Donald Trump has said military operations against Iran could continue for weeks, and American lives have already been lost as the war unravels.

In an interview with NBC News Sunday, Trump said “we expect casualties” but “in the end it’s going to be a great deal for the world.”

U.S. Central Command announced on Monday that a fourth service member had been killed on duty as Iranian missiles targeted American bases in Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait.

“The fourth service member, who was seriously wounded during Iran’s initial attacks, eventually succumbed to their injuries,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.

CENTCOM on Sunday announced three other service members had died in the line of duty, while several other troops had “sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions.”

The announcement of yet another loss of American life came shortly after six aircrew members were forced to abandon their jets after Kuwait mistakenly shot down three American fighter jets on Monday. The aircrew have been safely recovered and are in stable condition, CENTCOM said, and the cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

Still, Hegseth on Monday defended the administration’s weekend strikes against Iran, saying that "Iran was building powerful missiles and drones to create a conventional shield for their nuclear blackmail ambitions.”

“Turns out the regime who chanted 'Death to America' and 'Death to Israel' was gifted death from America and death from Israel,” Hegseth said. “This is not a so-called regime change war, but the regime sure did change and the world is better off for it.”
