Massie On Trump's Rhetoric: 'he's Gone Too Far'

Days after being called a "moron" by President Donald Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast, Rep. Thomas Massie said Sunday that Trump has "gone too far" with some of his insults and needs to be monitored.

Speaking on CNN's "Inside Politics With Manu Raju," the Kentucky Republican did not highlight Trump's remarks about himself, instead focusing on insults of his wife and of the social media post posted by the White House that depicted former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.

Massie added: "Once you pass certain guardrails, like attacking a man's spouse or getting into racist tropes, I think it's somebody at the White House, maybe Susie Wiles, needs to go to the president and just ask him for his phone, and maybe ask him just to show him the tweet before he sends it out," referencing the White House chief of staff.

After that video depicting the Obamas was widely denounced, including by some Republicans, the White House took it down.

"He should absolutely apologize. He's gone too far. I mean, he's attacked my wife recently online, and I do think there are limits," Massie told host Manu Raju.

On Thursday, Trump offered a round of insults of Massie, mocking his intelligence and referring to his opposition to some of Trump's policies. “He’s an automatic no. No matter what,” he said. Massie also earned Trump's wrath by pushing legislation, along with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

On Sunday, Massie focused on Trump's digs at his wife on social media posts.

"Fortunately, everything he says about her is untrue, but it's beyond the pale," he said. "And I and people recoil when he goes to those racist tropes or when he attacks spouses. It's just uncalled for."

Massie, who is facing Trump-supported candidate Ed Gallrein in the Kentucky Republican primary, also took a light approach to Trump's insults of him.

"I have two degrees from MIT, and I'm sorry you booked a moron today on your show," Massie told Raju.
