Minneapolis Has ‘deep Mistrust’ Of Federal Agents After Ice Shooting, Mayor Says
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Sunday said a “deep mistrust” now exists between his state and federal law enforcement following the fatal ICE-involved shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good.
In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Democratic mayor pushed back on the Trump administration’s characterization of both Good and the shooting and demanded state officials be allowed to participate in the investigation.
“When you've got a federal administration that is so quick to jump on a narrative as opposed to the truth, I think we all need to be speaking out,” said Frey. “There is deep mistrust because so many of the things that we are hearing are not true.”
Good was shot and killed in her car by an ICE officer Wednesday. While Minnesota officials said there was no evident reason to shoot Good, the Trump administration argued the officer was acting in self-defense to avoid being run over by Good.
While a New York Times analysis of several bystander videos concluded that the footage contradicted the Trump administration’s assertion, Vice President JD Vance called Good’s death a “tragedy of her own making."
But Frey on Sunday continued to contest the administration's version of events.
“You don't need to take my word for it. You don't need to take their word for it. Watch the video. The ICE agent was not run over, as Trump stated,” Frey said. “You had a person that was definitively trying to just get out of there. They were trying to leave the scene; that is not a person that's trying to run an ICE agent over.”
Though an investigation into the shooting is underway, Frey stopped short of stating whether he will accept the investigation’s findings. Minnesota officials this week said that federal law enforcement is freezing out state investigators.
“Let's have the investigation in the hands of someone that isn't biased,” Frey said Sunday. “Let's not have it exclusively run through the FBI at the federal government for the Department of Justice. Let's have it with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at the state level.”
