Top House Republicans Privately Push To Keep Members From Being Appointed To Graham’s Seat
Senior House Republicans scrambled Sunday to keep their members out of consideration for appointment to fill Lindsey Graham’s now-vacant Senate seat out of fear of further eroding their razor-thin majority, according to four people with direct knowledge of the conversations.
Those conversations included South Carolina GOP officials, the people said. GOP Gov. Henry McMaster will appoint someone to fill the seat through January, with a special primary election next month to fill Graham’s spot on the November ballot.
Trump allies also say they will be able to block Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) from the appointment, and are making clear in private she has openly clashed with the president over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and other key matters, according to two of the people and two others. Mace is already considering a bid for the seat.
Trump allies also point to Mace’s recent dismal performance in the governor’s race as another reason she shouldn't be a top contender for the seat.
The people were granted anonymity to discuss the private conversations.
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) cited the House margin Sunday morning in announcing his plan to stay in the chamber in the immediate future. He said he spoke with President Donald Trump Sunday and "assured him my goal is to remain in the House to keep his two-vote majority for the American people!!!"
