Trump Endorses Darline Graham For Lindsey Graham's Open Senate Seat
President Donald Trump on Friday endorsed Sen. Darline Graham (R-S.C.) for the Senate seat long held by her late brother, Lindsey Graham.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he welcomed Graham to the Oval Office on Thursday and urged her to join the already packed Aug. 11 Republican primary field.
“During her visit, I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate,” the president wrote. "I hope Darline does this, in that there would be nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey.”
“RUN, DARLINE, RUN!” Trump added.
Graham has not yet announced whether she will run.
The endorsement comes after POLITICO reported Friday that Graham has been privately weighing a campaign for a full six-year Senate term and has begun discussing the possibility with political allies. Trump had previously backed Graham’s appointment to temporarily fill her brother’s seat following his death last weekend.
A spokesperson for Graham did not immediately return a request for comment.
The filing period for the special primary opens Tuesday and runs through July 28, with Republicans already eyeing a potentially crowded field to replace one of the party’s most influential senators. Possible candidates include Reps. Russell Fry, Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, as well as South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette.
If she runs, Graham, would likely be the front runner, carrying both her brother’s legacy and the backing of the president.
