Trump Says Ai Executive Order Limiting State Rules Coming This Week
President Donald Trump said he will issue an executive order this week establishing a single national artificial intelligence standard so the U.S. can continue to lead on AI.
“I will be doing a ONE RULE Executive Order this week. You can’t expect a company to get 50 Approvals every time they want to do something,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Monday morning.
“We are beating ALL COUNTRIES at this point in the race, but that won’t last long if we are going to have 50 States, many of them bad actors, involved in RULES and the APPROVAL PROCESS,” he added.
A draft executive order blocking state AI laws was leaked in November. It sparked debate over the U.S. government’s role in regulating the emerging technology, and whether a federal standard should preempt state and local laws.
The initial executive order was shelved as House leadership made a last-minute push to tack AI preemption language onto the year-end defense policy package. That effort fell short last week, when House Majority Leader Steve Scalise told POLITICO that the NDAA “wasn't the best place for this to fit.”
