Two Service Members Killed In Iranian Attack, Centcom Says
Two American service members were killed in Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on Friday in Jordan, U.S. Central Command announced on social media Saturday. Another service member is unaccounted for.
The deaths mark the latest flare-up in tensions since President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran had ended. Sixteen service members have lost their lives in the fighting since the war teed off in February.
“Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged,” CENTCOM said in a statement. “Other personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty.”
The administration told Congress that it had resumed its war against Tehran last week, as Trump fumed over stagnant peace talks and continued uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides have since traded heavy blows, and Trump reinstalled a blockade on Iranian ships in the waterway, a critical transit lane for some 20 percent of the world’s oil.
And even as the administration insists the door is still open for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, the president appears far from convinced.
“My whole life is deals. I don’t see it. I don’t see it with them,” he said at the NATO Summit this month in Turkey.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the deaths.
