Aaron Rodgers Continues To Praise Steelers Young Pass Catchers

The Pittsburgh Steelers made it a point of emphasis this offseason to add to their wide receiver room. Last season, it felt like too much of the pressure fell on the shoulders of DK Metcalf. After trading for Michal Pittman Jr, drafting Germie Bernard, and having another offseason to continue to develop Roman Wilson, the Steelers’ receiver room has a much more positive outlook for 2026.

Speaking to the media after practice Wednesday, Rodgers took time to talk about a mistake that Wilson made in practice that resulted in an interception.

“Roman made a repeat mistake,” Rodgers told the media. “That’s a good learning experience, because I don’t think he’s going to do that again. But he did the same thing early in training camp, and we said, ‘hey, on that under route, you’ve got to keep coming.’ So I think it’s best that it happened in practice. Roman is a great kid. He’s had a fantastic camp. I have utmost confidence in him. He’s going to have to play a big role for us. But mistakes can happen. That’s a great one to happen in practice. But he’s gotten a lot better, and I’m really proud of Roman.”

Despite Wilson making a “repeat mistake” today is practice, I think it’s telling that Rodgers took the time to express just how much confidence he has in him. Wilson was a healthy scratch in four of the last five regular season games last season, so it’s hard to imagine Rodgers trusted him last season. After putting together a second really impressive training camp, it seems like the bond between Rodgers and Wilson has grown over the offseason.

When Rodgers was asked about how rookie second round pick Germie Bernard has looked throughout the preseason, he praised the young wideouts attention to detail.

“He’s got a great attitude. He really wants to learn. The best thing I can say about him is he hasn’t made repeat mistakes. There’s mistakes that are going to happen as part of the game, especially for young guys,” Rodgers said. “But when he does make a mistake, he takes it to heart and studies it and makes sure he doesn’t repeat that thing.”

After saying that Wilson made a “repeat mistake,” I find it interesting that Rodgers used the same wording when describing the rookie wideout. Rodgers has a tendency to not trust young players as much, so the fact that he’s saying that Bernard learns and adapts quickly form his mistakes is crucial.

The veteran quarterback knows the young wideouts could be a big part of the Steelers’ passing attack in 2026. In what could be a more pass-heavy offense under new head coach Mike McCarthy, the more players Rodgers trusts to get the ball to, the better.
