After the Kansas City Chiefs16-15 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFL preseason Week 2, the team is back at practice — but not in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Training camp concluded last week, so the Chiefs are settling back into the team facilities at One Arrowhead Drive. Head coach Andy Reid stepped up to the podium before Monday’s practice to update the local media on the players currently injured.

Players who will not practice on Monday

  • Wide receiver Jeff Caldwell (Hyperextended Knee)
  • Linebacker Jack Cochrane (Knee)
  • Safety Chamarri Conner
  • Defensive end Ashton Gillotte (Plantar fascia)
  • Safety Alohi Gilman (Low-back spasms)
  • Guard C.J. Hanson
  • Wide reciver Jimmy Holiday
  • Quarterback Chris Oladokun (Concussion)
  • Left tackle Josh Simmons (Lower back)
  • Defensive end Tyreke Smith (Hamstring)

Right guard Trey Smith returns to practice

Excluded from Reid’s rundown was right guard Trey Smith, who missed the majority of padded practices in training camp due to a hip injury that was significant enough for Smith to go see a hip specialist.

It’s a relief to hear the team’s starting right guard is back on the practice field with a few weeks to go until Week 1.

“We’ll ease him back in, but he wants to get out there and get going,” Reid described Smith. “It has been killing him not to be out there. He’s kind of wired that way.”

“Trey loves to play,” Reid elaborated. “But it was important that he let that thing heal up like he did. I think it will pay off for him down the road.”

Will Patrick Mahomes play in preseason Week 3?

“He’s doing great; we’ll just see,” Reid responded when asked about starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes playing against the Seattle Seahawks in preseason Week 3. “If the doctors and trainers and everybody that’s involved give him the okay, and most of all, if he feels like he can, then we’ll address that when we get there.”

Patrick Mahomes provides an update on his left knee:

"I feel great … I really wanted to play today … I'll wait until Coach Reid lets me go, but I'm ready … I'll be trying to play next week … I'm going to be ready to go for that 1st game of the year, God willing"#Chiefspic.twitter.com/Ca8fKniHHo

During an in-game interview with the Chiefs’ broadcast team on Saturday, Mahomes made it clear that he’s ready to be on the field, claiming “he really wanted to play today.”

“He wants to play every weekend,” Reid said when provided with Mahomes’ input.

The Chiefs will begin the normal, regular-season practice routine this week before the preseason finale on Friday evening at Arrowhead Stadium.
