This seemed inevitable after reports came out that the Broncos want Singleton back and that the two sides were talking about a contract leading up to the start of legal tampering. While fans may not value Singleton much at all, it’s clear the team does, and they said from the start that they wanted both Strnad and Singleton back this offseason.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Broncos GM George Paton told reporters that he would love to get both Justin Strnad and Alex Singleton back. Well, they did just that.

“[ILB] Alex [Singleton] and [ILB] Justin [Strnad], we’d love to have those guys back. We’d love to have them back, regardless of what’s in the draft. We see those guys as Broncos. If we let those guys leave, what are we doing? Those are good guys, but that doesn’t mean we can get them. Everyone is watching tape. You look at both. When you are getting your plan for free agency, you look at the draft and where it’s strong there. ‘OK, maybe it’s strong at receiver…’ It is a balance and you do develop your plan, so it is a good question. With some players, you just want to get back regardless of the strength.”

Whether fans like it or not, the Broncos and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph value what Alex Singleton brings to the team. He is their team leader, team captain, wears the green dot, calls the defense, and is beloved inside that locker room. They wanted to keep the leader of their top-ranked defense, and I understand that. I also understand why fans are upset. Singleton is a liability in coverage and has some issues making tackles and taking poor angles from time to time. Fans, including myself, wanted to see the Broncos upgrade at linebacker and are disappointed they are running it back with what they had last year.

With all that said, this was an elite defense that was one game away from the Super Bowl and likely a broken ankle away from being in the Super Bowl. The Broncos like their roster and want to run it back with the team they have instead of blowing it up.

I get it. I still hope they add some new blood to the team, but for now, they’re bringing back a few key pieces and hoping to run it back and hoping to get back to the AFC Championship Game and to the Super Bowl.
