The Milwaukee Bucks were able to sneak by the New Orleans Pelicans in overtime in Kevin Porter Jr.’s return, 141-137. Milwaukee had another efficient game shooting the ball from the three-point line, going 21/47 (44.7%). Read our full summary of the game here and catch a six-minute audio recap on the Bucks+ podcast, Bucks In Six Minutes, below.
Player Grades
Myles Turner
28 minutes, 16 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, 7/11 FG, 2/5 3P, +0
You have to feel for Turner here. He was inches away from potentially ending the game in regulation, but the tip of his shoe was barely out of bounds. Outside of that, it was a solid game from Turner on both ends.
Grade: B+
Ryan Rollins
40 minutes, 27 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, 4 turnovers, 10/19 FG, 3/10 3P, +9
Rollins continues his good stretch of play with his third straight 20+ point game. It wasn’t pretty from three-point range, but he was aggressive inside.
Grade: A-
Kyle Kuzma
31 minutes, 7 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 turnovers, 3/5 FG, -2
A day after scoring 31, Kuzma took a back seat tonight as a distributor. Outside of a head-scratching turnover at the end of regulation, it was a decent day at the office for Kuz.
Grade: B-
Amir Coffey
25 minutes, 16 points, 5 rebounds, 7/8 FG, 2/3 3P, +1
After one of his worst games of the season, Coffey had his best game as a Buck, by far. He scored nine in the first quarter and also had an acrobatic layup later on.
Grade: B+
AJ Green
36 minutes, 20 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 6/12 3P, -2
Green hit some big shots for the Bucks when they needed them. His heavily contested three-pointer to put Milwaukee up six in overtime ended up being the deciding bucket.
Grade: B+
Kevin Porter Jr.
29 minutes, 18 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 turnovers, 7/14 FG, 3/4 FT, +1
The Bucks missed KPJ dearly during the six games he was out. While he had a rough patch where he turned the ball over and missed a dunk, it was a productive return to the lineup.
Grade: B
Jericho Sims
28 minutes, 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4/4 FG, +6
Back-to-back good games for Sims. He did a solid job defending Zion Williamson in spurts, even forcing him to lose control of the ball with eight seconds left in overtime to help seal the game.
Grade: B-
Gary Trent Jr.
24 minutes, 13 points, 2 assists, 5/7 FG, 3/5 3P, +4
If the Bucks decide to make a deal today, GTJ has substantially raised his trade stock. He’s shooting 44.1% from three in his last five games, including last night.
Grade: B
Pete Nance
19 minutes, 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 6/9 FG, 4/7 3P, +4
Have the Bucks found their Bobby Portis replacement? Nance has been averaging 8.6 PPG since he entered the rotation and is shooting 52% from three (3.1 3PA) in these eight games.
Grade: B+
Doc Rivers
Credit again goes to Doc for seemingly getting the most out of a short-handed group last night. Despite their record, the Pelicans are a talented group, so getting the win without four rotation players looks good for Rivers. He might have stuck with Sims for a bit too long, but he was arguably the best defender on Zion all game.
Grade: B-
Limited Minutes: Andre Jackson Jr.
DNP-CD: Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Cole Anthony
Inactive: Alex Antetokounmpo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Gary Harris, Taurean Prince
Bonus Bucks Bits
- Last night saw the return of Kevin Porter Jr. after injuring his oblique. KPJ told the assembled media about when it happened and the process he went through to come back:
“It happened in LA (against the Lakers), I think it was in the second quarter. I thought it was my bone that was hurting, so I kept playing on it. It didn’t get better, so I wanted to get imaging to see what it was, since it was just regressing. They called it something very rare; there are only 10 cases in the world. It was based off my symptoms and my day-to-day. It was very possible I could’ve been out for eight weeks, so I was very blessed to get back out there as fast as I did.”
- Late game execution has been a problem at times for the Bucks, but tonight was one of their better showings in that area. Doc praised the team in those moments during his post-game comments:
“The end of the game play, we couldn’t have predicted it better. We knew the five was going to help, and just get (Myles) to the corner. We thought Scoot could get to the basket, which he did. We did a lot of good things, and we got lucky a couple of times. The back cut at the end of the game (from Murphy), he had the layup, and I think it was Ryan who saved the day. We did a lot of good things, (and) what I liked is that both units played well.”
- Three players either set or tied a season high last night. Green tied his season high in points (20) and three-pointers made (6).
- Amir Coffey tallied the most points he’s had in a Bucks uniform with 16.
- Kuzma dished out nine assists, the most for him this season. His previous high was eight, which he set last week on the road against the 76ers.
