Caitlin Clark had just finished making her own pitch for LeBron James when the actual news broke.

The Indiana Fever star was speaking to reporters ahead of WNBA All-Star weekend Friday in Chicago when word came down that James had joined the Philadelphia 76ers – moments after Clark had jokingly lobbied for him to join her own Indiana Pacers.

“No way! I just pitched him for the Pacers — it didn’t get to him fast enough,” Clark said during her media availability. “The 76ers? Wow, wow.”

Clark was not alone in expecting a different outcome. For much of the summer, the Warriors were considered one of the true frontrunners for James, with Draymond Green declining his own player option and reportedly spending time with James personally in pursuit of pairing him with Stephen Curry for one final championship run.

“Selfishly, I wanted the Warriors, because Steph and Bron would have been absolutely insane together,” Clark said. “But they have some serious talent on the 76ers — arguably, maybe, one of the favorites in the East now, with the Knicks and, obviously, my Pacers.”

James addressed the decision directly on social media, revealing he had seriously considered retirement before choosing to keep playing. The move marks the fourth team of his career and pairs him for the first time with Jaylen Brown, whom Philadelphia acquired from Boston earlier this month.

As for Clark, her focus had already shifted to logistics.

“I’ll be watching more 76ers games,” she said. “I’m going to go wait for the NBA schedule to come out and make sure I have my tickets reserved for when the 76ers come play the Pacers, because those are always hard to get. But happy for him.”

For the Warriors and its fan base, that “what if” is now permanent — and after Friday, Caitlin Clark is not the only one left wondering what could have been.
