In some notable yet unsurprising news, the Chargers are reportedly set to release offensive guard Mekhi Becton in the coming days, per ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler. Becton signed with the Chargers this past offseason after winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles but severely underwhelmed in his lone year out in Los Angeles.

Becton missed three games in 2025 while also missing time throughout the other 14 he suited up for. Per Pro Football Focus, he finished the regular season as 79th-ranked offensive guard in the league among 81 qualifying players with an overall season grade of 35.7. For context, a 60.0 is considered “average” by PFF.

His 34.3 as a run-blocker was graded the worst among those 81 players and his pass block grade wasn’t much better at 45.2 which ranked 72nd.

When Becton was initially signed, it was on a cheaper deal than expected which was received as a positive given that he was bringing his championship experience to the team, regardless of how much he played an individual role in hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. But whether it was the lack of consistency from the players around, or that Greg Roman’s system was truly not ideal for Becton, the massive guard just never found his footing alongside some pesky negative injury luck.

The move save the Chargers upwards of $9.7 million in cap space.
