Colts Place Backup Safety On Reserve/retired List
The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that the team has placed backup safety Reuben Lowery III on the Reserve/Retired list, meaning he’s elected to not continue his professional football playing career at this time.
After being claimed by the Colts off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens last year around mid-October, Lowery did not appear in a game for Indianapolis last year but served as positional depth.
Signed as an undrafted rookie in 2025 by Baltimore, Lowery III appeared in 3 games (1 start) for the Ravens in 2025, making 5 tackles (1 sol0) before being placed on league waivers.
Outside of safety Cam Bynum, and Hunter Woehler, who missed all of last season with a Lisfranc injury, the Colts have largely seen a lot of expected turnover within their safety room—with Lowery being the latest departure.
Specifically, the Colts saw former starting safety Nick Cross depart to the Washington Commanders in free agency, while backup Rodney Thomas II signed with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. Veteran safety and former NFL All-Pro special teamer George Odum, who rejoined Indianapolis last year, also remains unsigned.
Replacing them are reinforcements such as rookie 3rd round rookie safety AJ Haulcy, as well as veteran free agency signings Juanyeh Thomas and Jonathan Owens as depth.
Colts safety Daniel Scott, who appeared in 4 games last year, is also returning.
Otherwise, Wisconsin undrafted rookie safety Austin Brown is in the fold, and Iowa State’s Ben Nikkel, who spent part of last year on the Colts practice squad, is also a holdover.
