Instant Analysis: Rocky start, strong finish, key NFC East win

The Commanders (2-4-1) emphasized the importance of being competitive for all four quarters coming out of their bye week. They still have some work to do there; head coach Dan Quinn said he thought they played well in three. They were still plagued by pre-snap penalties — they committed four fouls in their first nine plays — and had a fumble and a missed field goal on their opening two drives.

Once the Commanders started to pick up steam, however, it was difficult for the Eagles to slow them down. They outgained the Eagles 318-201 for the rest of the night, recording 16 first downs and averaging nearly six yards per play.

“After that TD drive [from the Eagles], I thought, ‘Okay, that’s it. There we are,'” head coach Dan Quinn said after the game.

It still was not pretty; the Commanders had to send Drew Stevens out to kick four field goals — an issue Quinn said must be cleaned up — but their defense bought them time by putting consistent pressure on Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee and the rest of Philadelphia’s offense. The Commanders generated pressure on 46.5% of dropbacks — a season high, according to NFL+. It led to five sacks from the unit, one of which resulted in a fumble and recovery deep in Eagles territory.

Can this win ignite a turnaround for Washington?

The Commanders needed this win if just to settle a nervous building, knowing they couldn’t afford to lose to a wounded Eagles team at home. But if the Commanders beat the Rams at home next week, then they can talk about turnarounds. Washington committed nine penalties, one of which wiped out an interception deep in Philadelphia territory and continued a season-long theme. Quarterback Jayden Daniels wasn’t that sharp, but he made big plays and averaged 13.5 yards per completion against a defense that was healthier than it has been. Daniels got his first win since Oct. 5, 2025, and Washington’s defense hounded Tanner McKee all night and held Philly to 3.4 yards per play until late completions boosted that average to 3.9. Maybe this win doesn’t represent a turnaround, but the Commanders did what was necessary.

Trend to watch: With Terry McLaurin done for the season, Washington needs other receivers to help more. Sunday night, Treylon Burks, who is taking over for McLaurin at the X spot, caught three passes for 81 yards, including a 53-yarder. Rookie slot receiver Antonio Williams caught a career-best five passes for 54 yards, including a 30-yard grab. Both receivers set up field goals with their long catches. — John Keim

Commanders Instant Reaction: Depleted Front Delivers the Biggest Answer Against Eagles

The penalties didn’t disappear after the bye, but Washington’s pass rush took over, and Rachaad White finished the job on the ground.

With McLaurin out and three defensive tackles unavailable, Washington needed contributions from the players taking on more work. Antonio Williams got involved early, Charles Omenihu made his return count, and Stevens answered his opening miss with four straight makes. Those contributions helped the Commanders overcome another night of costly mistakes and keep their season alive.

Washington’s defensive front finished this game. Dorance Armstrong was still making plays against the run, and Odafe Oweh beat Jordan Mailata off the edge for a late sack. A season-high five sacks is the production Washington has needed from this group; Washington did it without Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and Jer’Zhan Newton, while holding Saquon Barkley to 30 yards on 13 carries.

K’Lavon Chaisson’s late sack helped put Philadelphia in a desperate situation, and Rasul Douglas took advantage when McKee floated a ball up for grabs. Chaisson’s penalties were costly, but he also helped Washington close this game. After having an earlier interception erased by a flag, the defense made this takeaway count.

Commanders take care of business against flailing Eagles in prime time

For the Eagles (2-6), it was their sixth loss in a row. They were without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, No. 1 wide receiver DeVonta Smith and a bevy of other core players because of various injuries. While Philadelphia had a better record before kickoff — and Washington has a lengthy injury report of its own — the Commanders were the superior team on paper.

Daniels started to get groove back in the second quarter. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 70 yards and one touchdown in the period.

Despite being shorthanded, the defensive line thrived. It generated consistent pressure on Philadelphia quarterback Tanner McKee and sacked him five times. While it must be noted that Barkley was playing through injury, Washington still deserves credit for limiting the Eagles to 3.1 yards per carry.

With the D-line rolling, the secondary locked down Philadelphia’s passing attack. McKee only passed for 212 yards and threw an interception.

It was easily the best performance of the season for defensive coordinator Daronte Jones’s group. The defense held the Eagles scoreless for eight consecutive possessions, forced two turnovers and was instrumental in the Commanders’ comeback.

Commanders hand Eagles sixth straight loss. Can Washington build off this win?

The Commanders didn’t seek outside help after losing Terry McLaurin for the rest of the season because of a patellar tendon injury. They relied on their in-house talent and, for the most part, their prudence paid off. Early mistakes by Washington’s pass catchers — a dropped pass, a fumble — turned into a standout performance from the Commanders’ skill players.

Tight end Chig Okonkwo, who earlier fumbled after a short catch deep in Philadelphia’s territory, had perhaps the catch of the year on a third-and-6 in the third quarter. Receiver Treylon Burks led the way with 81 receiving yards on three catches, veteran Stefon Diggs caught the team’s lone passing touchdown and rookie wideout Antonio Williams had five catches for 54 yards. All had grabs that could’ve been incompletions

The Commanders, after an awful start, shut down Philly’s offense and won a critical divisional game

Quinn got the complementary football he constantly talks about — good plays by the defense feeding into scoring drives by the offense. Luke McCaffrey had his best night of the season returning kicks. Drew Stevens nailed a huge 56-yard field goal late in the first quarter to get the Commanders on the board. If he’d missed, the Eagles would have taken over near midfield, ready to add to their lead.

And Daniels came back from a big hit by Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith late in the first half that knocked the wind out of him. In the second half, he hit tight end Chig Okonkwo for 21 yards on a great catch by Okonkwo, found Treylon Burks on a double-move for a 53-yard strike that set up another Stevens field goal, and got Antonio Williams on a 30-yard vertical route in the fourth, leading to another Stevens 3-pointer. Rachaad White sealed the game on Washington’s final drive, creasing a zone run for 33 yards to the Eagles’ 4-yard-line, then closing the show with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left.

Commanders overcome themselves, then overpower Eagles in 27-10 win

The win, Washington’s first since Week 3, improved its still-underwater record to 2-4-1, allowed the Commanders to crawl out of the NFC East basement, and moved them within two games of the first-place and idle New York Giants.

“It was a must-win,” tight end Chig Okonkwo said. “Every game is a must-win for us; that’s how we approach it. And we knew this week is even more important because of the state of the division.”

Daniels completed 16 of 29 passes for 217 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs in the second quarter and rushed for 23 yards. He looked injured after absorbing a big hit near the end of the first half, but postgame said he had the wind knocked out of him.

Not in the box score: Daniels held a sideline meeting with his offensive teammates after a sloppy first quarter: Four possessions, four penalties — all pre-snap — a turnover and a punt while splitting two long field-goal attempts. The Commanders season in miniature.

From The Athletic:

Daniels — so peeved by the Commanders’ three false starts in the first 14 times they lined up to run a play — called the offense together on the sideline to, um, address the matter. Daniels is famously level-headed. Here, he was plainly furious. This is a leader leading his charges. The message?

“No more BS,” tight end Chig Okonkwo said.

“Basically, like, f—ing lock in, bro,” left tackle Brandon Coleman said. “Like, we know who we are. We know what we can be. Just do your stuff the way it’s supposed to be done.”

“If we’re going to lose,” rookie wideout Antonio Williams said, “have somebody actually beat us.”

Eagles-Commanders final score: Philadelphia loses sixth straight game

The Philadelphia Eagles are 2-6 after losing to the Washington Commanders in Landover, Maryland on Sunday night. Final score: 27 to 10.

Well, the Eagles got out to a 1o to 0 lead in this one. That was nice. But then they played like the bad and dumb team that they are as the Commanders took control of the game to score 27 unanswered points.

The Eagles have now lost SIX games in a row. It’s their longest losing streak since 2012, which was Andy Reid’s final season in Philly.

The Eagles are now 5-11 in their last 16 games.

This team stinks. They’re a real tough watch.

Are they even going to win another game this season?

Next up for the Eagles: a Week 9 home game against the NFC East-leading New York Giants, who enjoyed a bye in Week 8.

Cowboys vs. Cardinals: 4 losers and 3 winners from the game

This loss is on the head coach. Dallas led 24-10 in the fourth quarter and somehow lost the game. The most frustrating part was how passive the Cowboys became once they had something to protect.

Dallas put together a 15-play drive that consumed nearly seven minutes, but once it reached Arizona territory the aggression disappeared. The Cowboys eventually settled for a field goal to make it 27-17.

Dallas recovered the onside kick later in the game at the Arizona 20 with just over two minutes remaining and had another chance to finish the game. What followed was painfully conservative.

Williams ran for no gain. Prescott was sacked. On third-and-16, Dallas handed the football to Williams for three yards and happily settled for another Brandon Aubrey field goal. That made it 30-24, but it left Arizona 1:09 to drive for a touchdown.

Arizona then went 80 yards, scored with ten seconds remaining and would have actually won the game in regulation had Chad Ryland not missed the extra point. Dallas then got another chance in overtime and still couldn’t finish it. Arizona eventually kicked the winning field goal.

Schottenheimer spent the closing stages coaching trying not to lose rather than coaching to win. There is a difference between intelligently managing a lead and becoming afraid to attack, this was the latter.

Dallas had multiple opportunities to finish an inferior opponent and repeatedly chose the safest possible option. It was scared football, and eventually Arizona made them pay

Cowboys vs. Cardinals: The good, the bad, and ugly from Week 8

They allowed RB Tyler Allgeier to rush for 147 yards and score two touchdowns, also allowing QB Garner Minshew to throw for 188 yards and three TDs in the third and fourth quarter. Whatever was working well for them before halftime completely changed in the second half. They allowed a big play after big play in both the running and passing game and ended up costing them the “W”.

How can the Cowboys be taken seriously at this point?

The Cowboys had a perfect opportunity to snap a four-game losing streak against the Cardinals and beat them for the first time at AT&T Stadium. Instead, they let a chance to get back-to-back wins go by the wayside, and while they will remain in contention in the NFC East, what have they done to prove they can put together any kind of winning streak? The offense was ineffective on the ground, and quarterback Dak Prescott could not consistently move the ball through the air. This was all with the Cardinals losing three key contributors to injury and benching their starting quarterback.

What to make of the QB performance: For the second time this season, Prescott threw for fewer than 200 yards (195). His touchdown pass required a one-handed catch from WR Ryan Flournoy. He was able to use his legs, picking up his first rushing touchdown of the season, but for a team with so many playmakers, the Cowboys have been kept in check in three of their past four games. — Todd Archer

Upcoming opponent – Rams

Commanders next game is at home on Sunday vs the Los Angeles Rams

ESPN

Can the Rams’ defense continue to keep Los Angeles afloat despite inconsistent offense?

In the first half against the Chargers, the Rams could not build on their strong offensive showing in Week 7, despite facing a winless team. Los Angeles had 95 scrimmage yards in the first half — its fewest in a half since Week 17 of the 2024 season, according to ESPN Research — and 66 of those came on the team’s final drive. The defense has kept the Rams in games for much of the season, including on Sunday with two interceptions. The group should get a boost once edge rusher Myles Garrett returns from injury.

Trend to watch: In an effort to fix their kickoff woes, the Rams had two kickers active on game day. Brandon McManus made a 30-yard field goal and was 3-for-3 on extra points. Joshua Karty, who handled kickoffs, had two of his attempts fall shy of the landing zone. — Sarah Barshop

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson to undergo surgery on right thumb, will be placed on IR

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will undergo surgery after suffering a right thumb injury on his first offensive snap of Sunday’s 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore head coach Jesse Minter announced after the game.

Minter said that Jackson will be placed on injured reserve, which will sideline the two-time MVP at least four games. Minter said “we’ll see” when asked if Jackson’s injury could be season-ending, per ESPN.com.

Jackson, who missed the Ravens’ previous three games due to an ankle injury, suffered his latest injury when his throwing hand collided with a Bills defender on a pass attempt to Zay Flowers in the first quarter.

Baker Mayfield on zero completed passes: Whatever it takes to win

The Bucs did not have a completed pass in the game, which was a first in franchise history and it made them the first team since the Bills in 1974 to go an entire game without completing a pass. The game was played in wet and sloppy conditions that joined Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield’s injured right thumb as reasons why the Bucs only tried three passes all game.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to win,” Mayfield said, via Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press. “That’s all that matters to me.”
