Deka Manchester Draws Big Crowd As Fitness Competitions Boom In Uk

Almost 3,000 racers from 752 gyms and 23 countries competed at Deka Manchester, the latest sign that the Hyrox-driven rise of fitness racing is a worldwide phenomenon

Deka, the Spartan-owned functional fitness racing brand, delivered its biggest U.K. event to date at Manchester Central, drawing nearly 3,000 racers representing 752 gyms and training communities across 23 countries. In total, nearly 5,000 people attended the event.

The Manchester turnout adds to a run of momentum for Deka, which launched its Gym vs Gym global competition earlier this month, a format built to let affiliate gyms compete against each other rather than crowning individual winners. That launch came as fitness competitions continue to gain traction worldwide, led by Hyrox and a wave of challengers including the ATHX Games, Xenom and most recently, China-founded BTWE.

Held last weekend, Deka Manchester’s numbers point to a format still expanding its base rather than serving the same core of competitive athletes: 81% of competitors were racing in their first-ever Deka FIT event. Women accounted for 51% of all competitors and 60% of team racers, while team entries outpaced solo participation, with 53% of athletes competing as part of a team.

“What happened in Manchester demonstrates that fitness racing is no longer a niche concept – it’s becoming a genuine participation movement,” said Deka vice president of international Emily leRoux. “Seeing athletes from more than 750 gyms come together, with many experiencing Deka FIT for the first time, shows there’s a real appetite for measurable challenges that bring communities together.”

Every Deka event follows the same standardized format — the Deka Mile pairs 10 functional fitness zones, including rowing, SkiErg, weighted lunges, farmer’s carries and sled pushes, with running intervals between stations, letting athletes compare results against a global leaderboard through their official Deka Mark.

leRoux framed the Manchester turnout as evidence that the format’s value lies less in crowning race-day winners and more in giving gyms a shared goal that keeps members engaged year-round.

“For gym operators, Deka creates another reason for members to train consistently, support one another and celebrate progress,” she said. “It’s not just about race day; it’s about giving people a goal that strengthens engagement throughout the year.”

According to Deka, competitors ranged in age from 10 to 74, with an average age of 41, and traveled from as far as the U.S., Australia and the UAE, alongside 1,788 spectators and 78 Family Wave participants. Deka arena events are now hosted in 41 cities across 12 countries, with a broader affiliate network of more than 1,000 gyms worldwide.
