Dominic Zvada Keeps Making Case In Giants Kicker Battle With Perfect Showing

Observations from Giants practice on Monday:

Calvin fine 

Calvin Austin III, who spent last year with Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh, made a nifty catch down the right side of the field on a throw from Jaxson Dart late during an 11-on-11 portion of practice.

Afterward, John Harbaugh said Austin gives the Giants “a lot of versatility” as a reliable option who can play both inside and outside. 

Dropping the ball 

With the Giants going no-huddle offense near the end of the practice, Isaiah Likely had a bad drop on a pass from Dart. 

Caught my eye 

In the ongoing kicking competition, count Monday as another win for Dominic Zvada.

The rookie, who spent his final two years at Michigan, made all five of his kicks, while Ben Sauls went 3-for-5. 

The consistency of Zvada this preseason has been a welcome change for the Giants, given their struggles at kicker the last two seasons, and for their fans, who’ve been scarred by the untimely injuries of Graham Gano and the embarrassing Younghoe Koo gaffe in which he missed the ball altogether.

While Big Blue still need to name a winner of the competition, Zvada — who, like Sauls, made both kicks in the preseason win Saturday — has certainly continued to make his case at this stage of training camp. 

Injury report 

RT Jermaine Eluemunor didn’t practice, but Harbaugh said he should be back Tuesday — as should RG Francis Mauigoa (stinger).

TE Theo Johnson left early after a collision with Kayvon Thibodeaux, but Harbaugh said he didn’t get a report suggesting anything serious and thinks Johnson is OK.

WR Jalin Hyatt also didn’t practice.
