Draymond Green reveals he ideally would like to sign extension with Warriors originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Warriors star Draymond Green currently is in the third year of the four-year, $100 million contract extension he signed back in 2023.

Green’s deal also includes a $27.6 million player option for the 2026-27 NBA season, giving the four-time All-Star the flexibility to either stay in Golden State for another year or become an unrestricted free agent.

The former NBA Defensive Player of the Year revealed what he would like to do once contract negotiations begin during the upcoming offseason.

“In an ideal world, I think the best path would be to decline and extend,” Green told Tim Kawakami on “The TK Show.”

“If I had it my way, I think that would be the best path forward. But in saying that, and having great representation, we worked really hard to get this option year when it was time for us to negotiate this contract. And so, I think we did the work to put ourselves in position to have some control, and we’ll have a conversation after the season.”

Green recently turned 36 years old on March 4 and has 13 years of NBA experience under his belt. Also having won four NBA championships with the Warriors, Green expressed his desire to finish his career with the same team that drafted him in 2012.

“One thing I can assure you is we’ll do what’s best for everyone,” Green detailed. “We won’t do what’s just best for me, and it sucks for the team. We won’t do what’s just best for them and sucks for me.

“We’ll do what’s best for everyone, and as long as everybody is happy and this marriage continues forward, great. If one person isn’t happy, the marriage gets a little nasty, and we don’t want that. I don’t want that. I’m sure they don’t want that, so we will figure out what’s best for everyone.

“But I think in an ideal world, I would love to more than likely opt out and extend or opt in and extend or whatever that looks like. We have to have that conversation, but the way I feel has never changed, and I would still love to finish here [with Golden State] if that’s possible.”

This season, Green is averaging 8.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game in 65 games played. Although Green’s numbers no longer are at the level they used to be, the two-time All-NBA selection still remains as an irreplaceable vocal leader and defensive mastermind for Golden State.

While contract talks between Green and the Warriors are inevitable during the upcoming offseason, the team is focusing on finishing the 2025-26 NBA season strong and hopefully carrying some momentum over to its upcoming play-in tournament appearance.
