Jalen Hurts looking good was my biggest takeaway from the Eagles’ Week 1 win. The offense as a whole was … uneven … but QB1 made big plays to carry the team to victory. His run to pick up a first down on 3rd-and-18 was massive and he made some really nice precision throws (see: Dallas Goedert’s first touchdown, DeVonta Smith’s sideline catch). The offense has a lot to clean up and improve upon … but it’s always easier to feel good about your favorite team’s outlook when the QB is playing well.

Roob’s Observations as Eagles hang on for Week 1 win over Commanders – NBCSP

Considering the pocket was breaking down snap after snap, Hurts was terrific Sunday. On the Eagles’ third possession, he heaved a perfect 64-yard bomb down the right sideline to the 6-yard-line to newcomer Dontayvion Wicks and after Cam Jurgens’ second penalty of the quarter, threw a dart to Dallas Goedert in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. Two spectacular throws on his sixth and seventh passes ever in Sean Mannion’s offense. Encouraging start. Later in the second quarter a terrific nine-yard TD pass to Wicks, and with six minutes left in the fourth quarter he found Goedert open over the middle and lobbed him a short pass that the veteran tight end turned into a 43-yard touchdown, longest by an Eagles tight end since Brent Celek’s 65-yarder in the historic comeback win at the Meadowlands in 2010. Considering how little help he was getting up front, I thought Hurts was outstanding in his first game working with Mannion. He also had some terrific runs – a 14-yarder on a 1st-and-20 in the third quarter and a 22-yarder on a 3rd-and-18 on the 4th-quarter TD drive. When he ran it was out of desperation under duress not out of any kind of set play. Hurts finished 14-for-25 for 203 yards with the three TD passes and no interceptions and a 122.2 passer rating along with 48 rushing yards on five runs before a couple kneel downs. He overcame a lot.

Jalen Hurts let out a chuckle and a smile while he contemplated what he would say, and perhaps more tellingly, what he wouldn’t. The Eagles quarterback was asked about his first touchdown pass of the new season and the fact that it looked eerily similar to the final play of the season before. Hurts found Dallas Goedert running up the seam on the same four vertical route concept that had become the lasting symbol for the group’s offensive struggles in 2025 and the limited menu some blamed the 28-year-old signal caller for during the offseason. So what was going through Hurts’ mind after he ripped the throw high enough and far enough into the back of the end zone for only Goedert to make the play and promptly turned toward the sideline, shrugging his shoulders in celebration? “It’s a great play. It’s a great play,” Hurts said with a chuckle. “Y’all will dig. Y’all will try to figure something out.”

Did the Eagles’ new offense pass the test Week 1? There was a boom-or-bust element to it, but the explosive plays carried them to a passing grade and a win over Washington. From WR Dontayvion Wicks’ 64-yard reception (a career high) to QB Jalen Hurts’ 22-yard scramble on third-and-18 to TE Dallas Goedert’s 43-yard score moments later, there was plenty to be encouraged about from offensive coordinator Sean Mannion’s debut. Some issues along the offensive front (left guard Landon Dickerson looked as if he was laboring) and long stretches of ineffectiveness brought back memories of 2025, but patience is required while Philly breaks in a new system. What to make of the QB performance: Hurts threw three touchdowns, was timely with his runs and didn’t commit a turnover. The pass-and-catch between the signal-caller and new WR1 DeVonta Smith along the right sideline late in the third quarter was a thing of beauty. Hurts was at his best when attacking downfield, completing 6 of 9 such attempts for 176 yards.

Let’s see it through midnight green glasses: The Eagles won. Jalen Hurts took snaps under center. He threw down the middle of the field. The Eagles just happened to be playing against two new coordinators and a Wahington Commanders team that had to do more learning on the job than the Eagles did. The Eagles survived a 24-22 scare over Washington on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field to keep Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni a perfect 6-0 in season opening games and 35-14 overall. Under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, Hurts completed 14 of 25 for 203 yards and three touchdowns—two TDs down the middle of the field on third down. Hurts rushed for 46 yards and made some strong throws. His 22-yard scramble in the fourth quarter saved the game. He made sure nine different Eagles touched the ball. Hurts prides himself on finding ways to win—and it is what he did.

10) The ‘Thank You’ Award ????: The schedule makers. If the Eagles had played a better team, maybe this would have been a loss? We’ll never know. The Eagles will get another soft opponent Week 2 to work out the kinks when they travel to Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans, who lost decisively to the lowly Jets Week 1.

Neither team played well. The Eagles just made more winning plays and that proved to be the difference in the game. The Eagles have plenty of issues to work on. The OL was very up and down. Landon Dickerson really struggled. He allowed a sack, a TFL and was called for at least one penalty. Cam Jurgens drew a couple of flags. Jordan Mailata had one. They struggled to consistently block the WAS front on run plays.

Eagles use big plays to outlast Commanders. Much like the last several seasons, the Eagles offense wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done, eking out a two-point win over a division rival. Philly’s offense was an inconsistent mess for much of the day, with the offensive line struggling to pick up the new blocking scheme, allowing far too many free runners into the backfield. However, Nick Sirianni’s club used a trove of big plays that made the difference. Saquon Barkley had a 42-yard scamper that helped set up a second-quarter score. Jalen Hurts, who was up-and-down, splashed three passes that went at least 30 yards, including the difference-making 43-yard catch-and-run TD from Dallas Goedert. The big plays covered for an offense that went three-and-out four times, including three straight to start the second half. There are obvious kinks to iron out with Sean Mannion’s system, but a win’s a win.

How about Zack Baun? He is off to an All-Pro start – 12 total tackles, two passes defensed, one tackle for loss. Just a great football player. The entire defensive line won with power, speed, and discipline. Jihaad Campbell had the lone quarterback sack – a play started by Ojomo – and nine total tackles. The Eagles gave up some plays in the fourth quarter but, hey, that is something to correct. Overall, a lot more good things than not, led by Baun. “Happy to get a win, especially in a division game,” Baun said. “Those games are crucial down the stretch and you never know what position you’re going to be at the end of the season and to get one at the beginning is nice.”

Stock Up — Carson Wentz. Wentz showed his limitations, and as he said after the game it’s better to be lucky than good when it came to penalties erasing a redzone interception, but he also showed he could move the offense under difficult circumstances with few reps in practice. He finished 12/19 for 133 yards and 3 TDs and a 123.5 passer rating.

Christian Parker was afforded an enormous amount of optimism and trust over the offseason. To be clear, he could still wind up being the answer. One game does not make anything. But the first outing for this new-look defense felt a lot like all of them for the group that they are trying to replace, one of the worst defenses in franchise history. Unfortunately it felt like more of the same, the same failing grades where the bare minimum of passing felt so far out of reach. Maybe Parker and company will turn things around over their version of summer school? The analogy is difficult to build on at this point because nobody expected this. Nobody expected more of the same. How did this possibly happen?

Daniels had to make a quick judgement call in the moment, and he followed his rules on that play by choosing to shovel the ball inside. Quinn and Daniels stood by the call, which will be negatively viewed because of the result. “The 2-point play, we just didn’t execute,” Daniels said. “It was the right call. Anything Blough calls, I’m with him. Regardless of who everyone else might view it, I’m with Blough 100%.”

Jaxson Dart — The second-year quarterback was outstanding against the Cowboys. He completed 23 of 29 passes (79.3%), for 230 yards, and three touchdowns. He ran 11 times for 54 yards. He got down or out of bounds when he needed to. He made big throws when the Giants needed them. He played the way a franchise quarterback is supposed to play.

The NFL is wrapping up Week 1, but the first odds of Week 2 have arrived at FanDuel Sportsbook. All 16 games have odds at this point, but with SNF and MNF still to play, we can expect some movement in the next 36 hours. Week 2 kicks off with the Bills hosting the Lions. Buffalo won a wild one, scoring a touchdown after the two-minute warning to secure a 36-31 win over the Texans. Detroit had to go to overtime and barely hold off a game Saints squad. After the Lions scored a touchdown in overtime, New Orleans advanced down the field and matched the TD. They went for two and the win but came up short after strong Lions coverage. The Sunday slate includes some fun ones in Week 2. Bengals-Texans and Jaguars-Broncos will be interesting. Saints-Ravens is suddenly an interesting one in its own right. The 49ers are the biggest favorite nex tweek, laying nearly two touchdowns against the Dolphins.
