In the NFL world, one former Wisconsin Badgers star got some brutal news this week as Los Angeles Chargers center Tyler Biadasz suffered a significant ACL injury during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers and is out indefinitely.

Biadasz, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Chargers this offseason after two seasons with the Washington Commanders. He was slated to be a key part of a Chargers offensive line that was ravaged by injuries last season.

Unfortunately, he won’t be participating in the team’s new-look offense under coordinator Mike McDaniel, with head coach Jim Harbaugh revealing on Thursday that ‘it doesn’t look promising’ for the center.

In addition to ACL damage, there is other damage in the knee to Biadasz’s MCL, and he’s seeking other opinions before the next steps in his recovery. On Thursday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed there is hope Biadasz can return this season.

A native of Amherst, Wisconsin, Biadasz was one of the best Badgers offensive linemen of the past decade. As a redshirt freshman, he started 14 games at center, receiving both Freshman All-American and All-Big Ten Third Team honors.

He improved even more as a redshirt sophomore, making All-Big Ten First Team, but elected to return to school for his redshirt junior season in 2019. It was then that he had his best year yet, making All-Big Ten First Team again, while also winning the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the nation’s best center. It marked the first time a Wisconsin offensive lineman won the trophy.

Biadasz was also a unanimous All-American in 2019. He did fall, though, in the 2020 NFL Draft to the fourth round due to his center-only profile and the fact that he underwent AC joint surgery ahead of the draft. He was taken by the Dallas Cowboys at No. 146 overall and spent four seasons with the team before signing with the Washington Commanders in free agency in 2024.

After being released there this offseason, Biadasz signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. Now, he’ll potentially have to wait till 2027 to make his debut there.
