The New York Giants got back to their home facilities at the Quest Diagnostic Training Center in East Rutherford New Jersey on Sunday, and got back to work Monday afternoon.

The team continued to shuffle the bottom third of their roster, officially signing DB JT Woods and releasing defensive lineman Sam Roberts.

The Giants practiced for nearly 3 hours on their first day back after having Sunday off. Our own Ed Valentine wasn’t in attendance today.

Injury updates

This is a preliminary report (via Dan Duggan of The Athletic) and we’ll update with additional information once we get it from head coach John Harbaugh.

Did not practice

  • WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee)
  • OL John Michael Schmitz (head)
  • OL Lucas Patrick (knee)
  • OLB Abdul Carter (hand/finger)

The most notable one here is Carter, who reportedly watched practice in sweats. After practice, Harbaugh informed reporters that Carter is “fine” and could be back to practice on Tuesday.

Harbaugh also confirmed that Schmitz has a concussion.

With trainers

  • CB Dru Phillips (knee)
  • CB Greg Newsome II (knee)

Both Phillips and Newsome reportedly worked on the side with trainers during practice.

New injuries

Several Giants seemed to get (hopefully minor) injuries during a tough 2 hour, 50 minute practice on Monday.

  • QB Jaxson Dart (ankle)
  • OG Francis Mauigoa (head/neck)
  • WR Jalin Hyatt (lower leg)
  • DL Chauncey Golston (Head)

Duggan reports that Dart rolled his ankle slightly early in practice but didn’t miss any reps. He was able to execute a bootleg rollout but also showed a slight limp walking around.

Sisi Mauigoa was checked by trainers late in practice, but finished the final period. Harbaugh says that he doesn’t know the outcome of the check by the trainers and that he’ll know more tomorrow.

Harbaugh also says Golston hit his head on the turf during practice.

Hyatt injured his lower leg (Duggan reports “ankle”, Pat Leonard reports “knee”) late in the day, after which practice was called.

Malik Nabers update

Duggan also reports that Malik Nabers continued to do individual work and run routes against air at the start of practice. While he hasn’t worked in one-on-ones or team periods yet, that he’s tolerating this level of work is a positive sign as he works toward Week 1.

Practice reports

Pressure breaks pipes

The Giants might not be as insanely blitz-happy as they were under Wink Martindale, or as Brian Flores is with the Minnesota Vikings. However, they won’t be shy about sending blitzers and forcing quarterbacks to execute under pressure.

Duggan reports that Ar’Darius Washington tipped Jaxson Dart pass while blitzing, leading to a tip drill interception for Darius Alexander. Alexander came down with an interception back in West Virginia, and this time the big man returned it for a touchdown.

Dart gets down

Dart rolling his ankle is obviously a concern, particularly with the Giants’ preseason game against the Vikings looming. However, Jordan Raanan reports that Dart is indeed working on becoming a more discerning runner.

Jaxson Dart sliding after running for the first on a live third-down play near the sideline. The defense, which was on that sideline, cheered him for the slide.

Darius Slayton finds the end zone

The Giants signed Darius Slayton to a big contract last year to provide a veteran presence on the offense as they transition to a new era. He never really seemed to find his groove with Jaxson Dart and required surgery to repair a double sports hernia over the off-season. It seems like he’s building chemistry with Dart in camp and finding his footing again after surgery.

Via Art Stapleton:

Darius Slayton ended 1st team 2-minute drill with a sweet double-move TD from Jaxson Dart. Went for 50-plus up the right sideline.

Duggan reported that rookie CB Colton Hood bit on the double-move, leading to easy separation for Slayton.
