Green Bay Packers Work Out 3 Safeties Following Training Camp Injuries

The Green Bay Packers waived reserve safety and second-string slot defender Johnathan Baldwin with an injury designation on Sunday to make room for two new receivers, and backup safety/starting slot defender Javon Bullard later suffered a bone bruise in his foot, which has sidelined him in practice. In short: The Packers got real thin at safety and in the slot very quickly.

Right now, their healthy players at the position are Xavier McKinney (starting safety), Evan Williams (starting safety), Kitan Oladapo (replacement starter in the slot), Mark Perry (late 2025 signing practice squadder) and Murvin Kenion III (rookie UDFA). It makes sense that the Packers would like to add players at the position, and they worked out three safeties on Monday, per the NFL transaction log.

Trey Dean

It’s been four years since Trey Dean went undrafted, and he has still yet to play in an NFL regular season game, despite having opportunities with three different NFL clubs. In 2026, Dean spent time with three different UFL teams (DC, Louisville and St. Louis), which led to him seeing action in 6 of 10 regular season games in the spring league and a playoff game with the Battlehawks.

He made 22 tackles over those seven games but didn’t have a pass breakup or an interception in the UFL. He also reportedly worked out with the Tennessee Titans earlier this month, following the completion of his spring season.

Josh Minkins

Josh Minkins was waived by the New England Patriots last August after initially signing with the team as a UDFA. He also worked out with the Indianapolis Colts before he wound up in the UFL with the Orlando Storm. With the Storm, Minkins played in seven regular season games and recorded 32 tackles and three pass breakups.

He also worked out with the Chicago Bears following the completion of his spring season.

Tra Fluellen

While you might see Tra Fluellen listed as a cornerback by some publications, it appears that Fluellen actually played the safety and slot positions for the Dallas Renegades last year. Consider him to be a safety. Clearly, the Packers had intentions with these workouts.

Fluellen’s NFL career began with the New Orleans Saints in 2024, where he was waived and later returned to the team as a practice squader. He was then waived from the offseason roster in June of 2025.

With the Renegades, he played 10 games, recorded 40 tackles, made a pick, posted a sack and had two pass breakups. This is the first workout that he’s reportedly had since the conclusion of his UFL campaign.

So far, there has been no reporting that the Packers have added any of these three safeties. If they do end up signing one, the team will need to make a corresponding roster move and waive/release a player from their currently full 91-man roster.
