Gym Members Are Prioritizing More Sustainable Workouts, Report Finds

New data from Myzone shows that gym members across age groups are spending more time working out in lower-to-moderate intensity zones

Fitness consumers may be increasingly motivated by consistency, longevity and sustainable routines over performance.

That’s according to Myzone’s State of Global Exercise Behavior 2025 report, which was based on anonymized and aggregated activity from active Myzone users worldwide,

The report found that members are largely moving several times per week, favoring repeatable workout habits over sporadic bursts of activity.

Across Myzone’s global user base, members averaged 3.5 workouts per week. Myzone found that younger users tend to be more episodic in their exercise habits, while older users are more routine-driven.

Activity preferences shift by life stage as well. Strength training ranked as the most dominant activity globally, followed by running, HIIT and walking. However, running was strongest among users under 20, while strength training led among those ages 20 to 29. HIIT dominated from ages 30 to 59 and walking became the leading activity among users 60 and older.

For gyms, studios and fitness platforms, the report highlights a more practical result of the longevity movement. Members are increasingly interested in training at a sustainable intensity, tracking progress and feeling connected to others, which increases their willingness to stay committed to workouts.

Across all users, 87% of time was spent in what the report calls “habit and longevity zones,” compared with 13% in higher-stress “performance zones.” Across every age group and gender, the majority of activity time, between 78% and 93%, was spent in those lower-to-moderate intensity zones.

Users are describing their goals in a similar manner. Maintaining fitness levels was their top motivation, cited by 72% of users, followed by tracking activity at 68%, building a habit at 58% and reaching milestones at 47%. Social connection ranked lower as a stated goal, at 20%.
