Is Matthew Stafford Injured? Rams Qb Removed Early Against 49ers

Quarterback Matthew Stafford did not finish out the Los Angeles Rams’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia.

Stafford left the game in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and was replaced by Stetson Bennett.

The 49ers beat the Rams 27-7. It's the fewest points the Rams have scored in a game with Stafford starting.

Stafford was not injured, instead removed from the game by Rams coach Sean McVay with the game out of hand.

"Matthew Stafford is not dealing with an injury," Tom Pelissero reported on the Netflix broadcast. "He has no medical personnel around him. This is strictly a coach's decision to go to Stetson Bennett."

Stafford was seen on the broadcast running off the field after the game. McVay was not asked about Stafford's health or the decision to pull him.

The veteran quarterback completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards and had an interception. He did not throw a touchdown in the game. He was one of two players, along with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, to throw a touchdown pass in every game last season.

Stafford was credited with two rushing attempts, losing a yard.
