Isaac Guerendo To Begin The Season On The Reserve/pup
The San Francisco 49ers placed running back Isaac Guerendo on the reserve/PUP. He will miss the first four games of the season.
Guerendo missed all of training camp after suffering a pec injury back in late May. He was an obvious PUP candidate. Guerendo wasn’t going to impact the team in the first month of the season. Placing him on the PUP lets Guerendo return whenever without using one of the Injured Reserve spots. You get to stash him on the PUP.
This may have been a different conversation if Christian McCaffrey, Kaelon Black, or Jordan James hadn’t returned from their August injuries. But that is not the case, and the 49ers do the prudent thing here in what figures to be a couple of days full of roster gymnastics.
Mykel Williams is another PUP candidate. With the new rule, Guerendo or Williams could have his 21-day practice window opened after Week 2.
As for the Injured Reserve, the 49ers could place Kurtis Rourke, Brett Toth, Luke Gifford, Ephesians Prysock, and Nick Martin all on the list. You can effectively keep all of those players without having to “waste” a roster spot. Then you can designate two players to return, likely Christian Kirk and Vederian Lowe.
Decisions, decisions.
