Jaguars Swing Trade With Dolphins To Acquire New Backup Qb

The Jacksonville Jaguars are swinging a deal for a young quarterback ahead of the NFL's 53-man roster deadline.

The Jaguars are acquiring Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.

Ewers was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Dolphins. The Texas product made three starts during his rookie season, posting a 1-2 record while completing 66.3% of his passes for 622 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Ewers was expected to open the 2026 NFL season as Miami's top backup behind Malik Willis. Instead, the team will turn to either second-year quarterback Cam Miller, undrafted rookie Mark Gronowski or a free-agent addition to man that role.

Meanwhile, Ewers will battle Nick Mullens for the backup job behind Trevor Lawrence in Liam Coen's offense.

Ewers was a cheap get for the Jaguars, as the 2025 seventh-round pick is in just the second season of a four-year rookie contract. He is set to make just over $4.3 million over the life of that deal, per Spotrac.com, and will have a cap hit of just about $1.04 million in 2026.
